Ruissalo


Now we have to talk about in my opinion the most beautiful place on Turku’s territory – Ruissalo. It is an island that is beginning next to the harbor and leads some kilometers towards the sea and the archipelago. The location is south-west of Turku if you search it on a Map.

Ruissalo is easy to reach for everyone. There is the chance to go there by car, bus, bike or even walk there. I tried all of these ways to go there already and have to say that every one of the options is simply equal and has benefits.

Ruissalo offers different nice nature walks, dog parks, camping areas, barbecue places, festival area and beaches. So there should be something for everybody.

Activities that I can recommend at Ruissalo are the following:
-          Go there for a nice walk in nature. The variety of different nature walks will offer a suitable walk for everybody or all members of a group. The nature experience is just great.
-          Go to the very end of Ruissalo and watch the sunrise or sunset. It is simply beautiful to see the whole sky on fire when the sun rises or sets on Ruissalo. The nice color will then be as well reflected by the water which makes the scenery simply incredible.
-          Watch the ferry incoming or leaving the harbor of Turku. It looks massive seeing these big ships so close to you. There are some points where you can come really close to them and which are quite easy to reach by bus.
-          Check out the Sauna place at Ruissalo next to the beach at the end of the island. At the end of the island there is a public Sauna which is located quite close to the sea. This seemed to me like the ideal to get in touch with Finnish Sauna culture.

My final tip that I would like to give you of you go there is, that you definitely should take a camera with you on that trip. You will find a lot of places that are worth taking a photo.

Why did I choose Finland?

When the decision about my studies abroad was made, I had to think about which region or more precisely which country I prefer. For me, my first choice was already Finland because of its reputation of having one of the world's best educational systems. In addition to that Finnish universities also grade their students with ECTS points which makes difficult calculations obsolete. My educational reasons were then furthermore completed with personal reason like Finnish nature, nice people, nice wintertime (which is unfortunately still without snow…) and so on. Hansa Kortelli

A shopping center in the middle of the city sounds like a good concept to me. This is exactly what Hansa Kortelli is about. Located straight in the middle of the heart of Turku at a place that is perfectly to reach by bus, bike, car or just walking. It offers a good variety of different stores and food places that have quite comfortable opening hours. For me as a student of Sepänkati Campus, it is perfectly located to go there after school and get the stuff I need there. Hansa Kortelli is currently under construction, this is why it probably does not look as beautiful as it would look without all that construction equipment. But after the renovation works it will probably be an amazing place. Hansa is also offering some nice coffee places that are good to meet other people. Especially in the rainy autumn, it was a good option to stay in Hansa instead of walking to a coffee place outside in the rain. All in all, Hansa is a nice place that most likely every student will visit...

Sauna with friends

When I am thinking back to my time before Finland, I could never imagine going to Sauna with my friends just for fun. It was for me something that just older people do and nothing really interesting for me and I think also not interesting for any of my friends. But Finland changed us. Now that I am used to Sauna, I am always planning my Sauna times like I am planning my meals or my laundry times. It is a fixed part of my week and day plans. Here in Finland I learned how relaxing a Sauna with friends can be after a long school day especially during the wintertime. The heat warms up the whole body and the time with friends and sometimes a cool drink in the Sauna helps to relax and calm down. For me Sauna is a routine that I don’t want to miss anymore and what I really want to establish as well in my day planning at home. It helps me to have some minutes just for me, calm down and after that focus on the main things again.
