Sepänkatu Campus


Talking about the Sepänkatu Campus, I have to say already in the beginning that this will probably be the first Blog post that is not really positive. Before I wrote this post, I had some conversation with other exchange students if my impression is too negative and found out that I was still more positive than most of the others. Since this should be an honest Blog, I will just write my impressions.

After two days at ICT-City, we entered Sepänkatu for the first time. Looking at it from outside the building, it was quite obvious that this building is older than ICT-city. At this point I was still positive because we also have older buildings with quite good infrastructure inside at my university at home. (Some of my classmates were already a bit shocked.)

When we entered the building, the names of the rooms were quite easy to understand. That was something positive. Our first lecture took place in room C03, I think I do not have to describe what the rooms in C0-wing are like. But I will still do it. When we came down there, it smelled like a mixture of excrements and sweat. That was simply disgusting. Some other exchange students got really angry and said things like: “On the first days they showed us the nice rooms and now they park us in the shit.”
I think it is understandable that TUAS does not want to invest more money in that campus but still it not really understandable how people can just leave that smell in the building.

Okay but enough about the smell…one almost good thing about Sepänkatu ist the INOPEDA-room. It is a good place to work on assignments and have group meetings. There is a printer and enough working tables for different groups. The bad thing is that eduroam is not working in this room so that students have to create wifi with their own phones. I think this is really poor but okay, I can not change it.

The cafeteria in Sepänkatu campus is nice and the workers there are very friendly. They do a good job and are always in a very good mood. I really appreciate that.

To sum it up, I can say that the most positive thing in Sepänkatu is the cafeteria. It is definitely time to close this campus as soon as possible.

I am sorry to give such a bad feedback but this is just my honest view on this campus.

Tornio

Tornio is a city in the north of Finland with 21,875 inhabitants. It is part of the Lapland region and is located right on the border with Sweden at the mouth of the Tornionjoki River in the Gulf of Bothnia. Tornio forms a twin city with Haparanda on the Swedish side. In my opinion, one should always combine a stay in Tornio with a trip across the border to Sweden. The border is close and entry is easy. In Sweden, the prices are cheaper than in Finland. Tornio was for me and my friends the ideal place to stay overnight and served and afterwards as the starting point of our Lapland road trip.

What is this Blog about?

The first of my Blog posts should be used to give you as the readers an idea of what the whole Blog should be about and what the people are that I am addressing it to. The main goal for that this Blog should aim is to make it easier for students that just arrive or will arrive in the future to make their way in Finland and especially in the area of Turku. In the beginning, I am thinking about starting with the general information about the area and later tell you also some more details about places to visit and activities to take part in. I really hope this blog and the corresponding entries will help you to get settled in Turku. I wish you all my very best for you and that you have an unforgettable and very enjoyable time in Finland.
